We recently wrapped up our first homeschool unit study for the 2020-2021 school year! As my eldest is just 5 years old and my youngest is almost 2, we included a lot of craft and sensory play in the unit. I initially intended to use Hana's (Pepper & Pine) Ocean Study curriculum which I purchased as soon as it came out (I was very excited, its beautiful and so rich in detail), however I think my girls will get much more out of it in future years, In Shaa Allah (God willing). Below I will list most of the activities we did, as well as the books and materials we used. I will also include a few of the printables I made so they hopefully come in handy for you too! The Big Book of the Blue was all we really needed for research. The only time I turned to the internet was for marine habitats (I used the Nat Geo website) and also to purchase some cute ocean creatures for our lapbook and other ocean crafts. One of our favourites was the Octopus Cardboard Art we made as our entry for Yuval Zommers Kid Art competition. You can see more of it on our Instagram @dinneranddaisies. We had a science lesson along with our fellow homeschooling friends in the community and the subject was Marine Habitats. For this, I made a few resources myself to go along with the lesson. We also read about Coral Reefs and Kelp Forests in the book Secrets of the Sea. The illustrations are beautiful and really capture the audiences attention. It was full of details in both the text and the visuals.I highly recommend this living book! We used the habitat cards and some printable ocean animals to match the animals to the correct habitat. Then I asked the girls to recreate their favourite Ocean Habitat in the Jellyfish printable.
